angelita, madrid, spain.

march 2025

our travels in 2025 took us to the iberian peninsula, where we kicked things off in madrid.

i was very excited to go to angelita, which is a restaurant and wine bar upstairs and a gastro-cocktail bar down below. the bar has been on the extended world’s 50 best bars list in 2024 and 2025, and the location just a block off gran via makes it super convenient.

we started the night with dinner in the main dining room. we did the Chef&Sommelier menu - 8 courses (6 savory courses plus a cheese and dessert course) paired to 8 wines. the food was delicious, comforting, and unfussy while still being elevated; the wines were all interesting and unique, pairing beautifully with the food.

pumpkin soup.

bread and olive oil.

artichoke.

wonton roll.

porcini mushrooms.

pisto.

black grouper.

oxtail cannoli.

cheese!

porcini ice cream.

after dinner, we headed to the basement bar for cocktails. the space was dark and cozy, and my pictures turned out terribly so i present them in black & white.

water and welcome candy.

cozy basement space.

the cocktail menu is very culinary, with drinks like pumpkin and toast (macallan 12, laphroaig, jara de monte distillate, roasted pumpkin, bread molasses) and sea lettuce and clams (palomino fine wine, clam distillate, sea lettuce cucumber, mint, carrot stems, cilantro). they explained that every ingredient they use, other than the alcohol itself, is sourced locally (possibly even grown in their garden) or made in-house. our drinks were excellent and the perfect nightcap to the evening.
